News and events – 2019

12/16/2019. We celebrated several of our latest achievements with a Holiday brunch in Mama’s Boy Cafe and Restaurant. Dami also visited us again and updated everyone on her medical school experience in the last two years.

12/13/2019. Aaron has officially received the PhD degree today at UGA’s graduation ceremony. Well done!

11/26/2019. Nuha Milad Ashtiwi joined the laboratory as a new PhD student. Welcome!

11/25/2019. Balázs was invited by Dr. Sophie Darch to hold a special seminar at the University of South Florida in Tampa. The talk was followed by great discussion.

11/20-24/2019. Demba attended the 68th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Maryland, adjacent to Washington DC.

11/08/2019. Aaron successfully defended his PhD thesis on the “ROLE OF THE DUOX1/LPO ANTIMICROBIAL SYSTEM AGAINST INFLUENZA VIRUS AND STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIAE”. Congratulations to Dr. Gingerich!  Aaron is the third PhD student graduating from the laboratory since its start in 2012.

11/06/2019. Our review published in Pathogens titled “Interactions between Neutrophils and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Cystic Fibrosis.” is one of the four awardees of the 2019 Pathogens Best Paper Awards. Link to the announcement.

11/04/2019. Dr. Joshua Chandler from Emory University visited UGA today and he was the department’s seminar speaker. Joshua presented his results on the project investigating the role of myeloperoxidase in the progression of early cystic fibrosis lung disease. He also provided very valuable feedback on our collaborative project studying the role of airway oxidants combating influenza virus.

10/31-11/02/2019. The 2019 North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference has started in Nashville, TN. 5,000 participants were expected to attend. All three posters presented by Ruchi, Samantha and Kayla received great feedback.

Nashville is a very vibrant city.

 

The Halloween theme of the opening party made it very special.

10/27/2019. Demba attended the AfroBiotech Conference 2019 organized by GeorgiaBio and presented his results on the influenza project.

09/04-07/2019. The International Human Peroxidases meeting held in the beautiful town of Brno in the Czech Republic was a very useful event to brainstorm with leaders in the field. The opening session was held in the same room where Mendel presented his studies laying down the foundations of modern genetics. Isabel and Kristina posed at Mendel’s picture.

 

08/08/2019. Faris Almutairi joined the laboratory as a new PhD student. Welcome Faris!

08/07/2019. Our laboratory is part of a research team lead by Dr. Frederick Quinn that has been awarded as one of the seven winners of the UGA Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Initiative to establish a new animal model to study tuberculosis-influenza co-infections and vaccination. Link to the announcement.

08/06/2019. The departmental faculty voted in favor of Demba’s promotion to associate research scientist. The first important step achieved. We hope to see similar results on the college and university levels.

07/30/2019. Tom presented the results of his summer work at the GVSP Research Day in the Coverdell Science Building. Congratulations Tom!

07/15/2019. All three abstracts submitted from the laboratory to the 2019 North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference held in Nashville TN October 31-November 3 have been accepted for poster presentations.

07/10/2019. Our proposed work has been chosen for oral presentation at the HUMAN PEROXIDASES international conference in Brno, Czech Republic. Scientific Program 

07/01/2019. The University of Georgia Clinical Translational Research Unit (CTRU) Seed Grant Program selected our pilot proposal for funding. Link to the announcement.

06/27/2019. We had a good-bye lunch with Eszti in the Mediterranean Grill in Athens. Eszti has been working with us for two years and recieved great results on her project. Enjoy your well-deserved summer vacation and good luck to your medical school!

06/07/2019. The review chapter titled “Neutrophil extracellular traps” that is part of the “NADPH oxidases” book currently published in Methods in Molecular Biology  (MIMB, volume 1982) has appeared online today. Link

05/18/2019. Thomas Campbell joined the lab for the summer as part of the Georgia Veterinary Scholars Program.   Tom studies NETs in canine neutrophils and clinical blood samples as a collaborative project here at UGA with Drs. Benjamin M Brainard (Dept. of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery) and Andy Moorhead (Dept. of Infectious Diseases). Welcome Tom!

05-11-2019. Demba presented his work at AAI 2019 in San Diego, California and received great feedback.

05/05/2019. Fayhaa has been offered a CURO Summer Research Assistantship by the UGA Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. Congratulations Fayhaa!

04/08-09/2019. All six undergraduate researchers in the lab presented an oral presentation at the UGA CURO Symposium 2019. Rachel, Maria, Rebecca, Eszti, Fayhaa and Arthur all did a great job. Congratulations! Here are a few pictures
